Entangled in the exodus from Darfur, refugees lead hesitant animals through swollen riverbeds during the rainy season across the border from Darfur into eastern Chad. The wadis, or "seasonal rivers", course through the landscape at the rush of the first rains. Many routes are rendered impassable, creating a logistical nightmare, which drastically impedes relief efforts.
